EASTLAKE STUDIO
projects

When a former commercial client contacted Eastlake Studio to assist in the design of a new residence, we were eager to assist.  Shortly thereafter, discovering the project was a penthouse condominium at 600 North Fairbanks, the recently completed Helmut Jahn tower in Streeterville, we were ecstatic.  On one of the top floors of the building, a full height glass curtain wall opens dramatic views of the city to the north, east and south.  We’ve been told that this is the only custom-designed unit in the building.

A rich palette of materials includes hardwood and stone, but the real star of the space is the cream-colored lacquer millwork throughout.  Working closely with a reliable woodworker, the millwork extends from public spaces to private.  Two strong curved gestures provide a dramatic flourish to the living room.  A football shaped element separates the living space from a semi-private study, while incorporating a plasma television, desk, and storage.  A complimentary curved screen frames the living area as one enters the unit and separates the living room from the kitchen.

Our client, a German-American couple, has a strong appreciation for art and design.  Having previously resided in a Streeterville town home, the condominium high in the sky presented some challenges and opportunities.  In addition to typical residential requirements, both husband and wife wanted semi-private workspaces.  As a result, the three-bedroom condo has spaces that support individual and family activities.
